Being an electrician is very varied and no one day is ever the same! Many of you will have a different interpretation of the overall
responsibility that comes with it, so I thought I would give you all an insight into the daily challenges that I face!
My trade is one of the few jobs that can have serious consequences if it’s done incorrectly. A building could be damaged or destroyed by fire while people can be injured or electrocuted. Because of this, Electrician’s have a great deal of responsibility. No matter how small or large the installation is, I must ensure that it’s safe. Whether working in a domestic, commercial or industrial environment, some form of electrical task will be performed every day. With this comes a great deal of responsibility!
When I work in a domestic space, I’ve been entrusted to go into someone’s home and ensure everything is working correctly and as it should be. I might only be there for a few days, maybe even only hours, but I may never return again! The installation, a light or a socket, will be used every day by the consumer for the next 40-50 years. So it’s our responsibility to ensure we leave the installation safe, protecting my client and their home.
Systems must be designed properly, installed to comply with BS7671 and finally carry out the full range of tests. We must ensure that if there was a fault, then the protective devices we installed will do what we put them there to do – disconnect that circuit and stop a person from getting burned or shocked. Installations must always be tested to ensure that they are safe. I have been working as an Electrician for 17 years now and I always test! Although I am very experienced and I use quality materials, I never leave any room for doubt in the work that I have installed.
You wouldn’t knowingly put yourself or your family in danger, and that must be the attitude when finding a quality trades person to carry out work in your home or business. Pay cheap, pay twice!
